Nava Waxman

Through my painting, I have the opportunity to delve into the obscurity of the definition of energy, as a physical and spiritual reality. At the threshold between conscious awareness and the realm of the unseen, is a moment in which all dimensions may be revealed.

You will see representational elements appearing in open spaces, while raw environment functions as a metaphor, reflecting the energy of the physical world.

Electric wires, lanterns, flimsy ladders and naked winter trees, birds suspended in anticipation and intricate bits of machinery that become nearly ornamental, out of place and out of time. All reminding us of the sensitivity within and the fragile dance of life as we know it.

Abstract elements appear below the surface; geometric lines and shapes, blurry horizons, hot spots as bursts of colors, sometimes illuminating, sometimes dimming different parts of the surface. They all reflect parts of the inner being and the status of the spiritual energetic condition of our existence.

The physical qualities of my work are a result of many layers. I start with simple drawings, ink and oil paintings. Collaged materials including mainly precious copper objects always found, and printed matter which again will present itself as found inspiration and contribute to the initial surface of the work. Once these layers are established, they are sealed with layers of beeswax, and then they are scratched and stained with pure pigment. The organic qualities of the copper and beeswax, communicate a feeling of substance and timelessness. The materials and processes used emphasize the paintings as visceral objects with an evocative physical and earthy presence.

A fascination with birds has become a predominant theme in my recent paintings. Birds seem to appear to me as an omen, alerting me of the importance of a certain moment or portending an event to come. This fascination may also be found in things deeper within the psyche – as they seem to be representative of the most human of emotions.

My paintings emerge from a place where contradictions are allowed, paradox reigns and reason is abandoned. My search is for the inherent radiance in all things... the extraordinary in the ordinary.

I see each painting as a small acknowledgment of the inner life that can perhaps reveal its own share of my soul. In turn that share of soul may connect to someone else's share of soul. Then perhaps beauty may be granted.
